Nippon TV, Japan’s leading multiplatform entertainment powerhouse, announced today that it has licensed the Korean remake rights for its drama series Life’s Punchline to Korea’s Leading Scripted TV Studio, Studio Dragon. This agreement marks the second international remake for the series, following the recent announcement of its Hong Kong adaptation.
Keisuke Miyata, Sales and licensing, Nippon TV said, “I am very pleased that this acclaimed series in Japan is being adapted in Korea by Studio Dragon, a world-renowned drama production company. This story is for anyone who has ever chased a dream, supported someone from the shadows, or compared their own life to the success of others, and the series utilizes a unique storytelling technique, weaving actual comedy skits into the drama to deliver unexpected surprises and laughter, leading to pathos. I believe these universal emotions will deeply resonate with Korean viewers, and the Korean version will captivate audiences around the world.”
Nippon TV’s original series, Life’s Punchline (10 × 60’), follows three young men in a comedy trio who decide to disband at age 28 after ten years of chasing stardom. Facing the harsh reality of having no career or savings while their peers move on to marriage and stable jobs, they find themselves in the midst of a “quarter-life crisis.” Their story intertwines with their biggest fan, a young woman working at a diner. Once an elite professional, she fell into despair after a career burnout and now lives with her younger sister. As the sisters find hope in the trio’s performances, all five find the courage to restart their lives. The series features a unique structure where each episode opens with a comedy skit performed by the main characters as a “play-within-a-play,” which eventually blends into the bigger plots of the drama.
The original broadcast on Nippon TV in 2021, starring prominent actors including Masaki Suda and Kasumi Arimura, captured a large share of younger audiences and achieved significant digital engagement, with almost 14 million total views on VOD within 10 weeks of its release. The series was also well-received in the industry, earning an award at the 2021 Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association Awards. Life’s Punchline | NIPPON TV
In addition to the Korean remake, the international expansion of Life’s Punchline includes the Hong Kong adaptation produced by MakerVille, a subsidiary of PCCW Media, which was unveiled at this month’s Hong Kong FILMART. This Hong Kong version is scheduled to be broadcast on ViuTV in late 2026. Securing these deals in rapid succession highlights the series’ universal appeal to global audiences and its unique structure as a scripted format.
Nippon TV previously licensed its award-winning series Mother to Studio Dragon for a Korean adaptation produced for the tvN channel in 2018. While fundamentally aligned with the original plot, the Korean version incorporated original romantic elements and a different ending. The series received critical acclaim not only in Korea but also internationally, and was selected for the official competition at the 1st Cannes International Series Festival (CANNESERIES 2018).
