72 Films producing Michael Jackson documentary series for BBC, with Fremantle handling global distribution

October 16, 2025 by TVA Editor

The BBC and Fremantle’s 72 Films have announced Legacy: Michael Jackson (w/t), a three‑part documentary series exploring the rise, controversy, and enduring legacy of one of the most successful pop stars of all time. With access to rare intimate archive, and revelatory interviews with those closest to him, this is the most fully rounded and authoritative portrait of Jackson yet produced – a deeply researched study of a trailblazing musical genius, whose personal life remains a complex enigma.

From his rise to fame at a young age in the racially segregated landscape of 1960’s America, to the controversies surrounding his personal affairs in later years, the series offers a comprehensive examination of Jackson’s life.  As well as the stories behind the iconic songs, innovative videos, and mesmeric live performances, the series will also explore the longstanding allegations of child sexual abuse, which he denied. In addition, the series will look at how the Michael Jackson estate continues to generate billions of dollars from his art, and how his legacy sits within the cultural landscape today.

Made by the Emmy winning 72 Films, a Fremantle company, the series director is Sophie Fuller – “I was drawn to directing this layered portrait of Michael Jackson – a rare opportunity to look beyond the headlines and explore the complexity of one of the most influential but polarising figures of our time. Our ambition is to better understand the man, his motivations, and the machine that built, and ultimately consumed him.”

The series is executive produced by Mark Raphael – “We feel very fortunate that the BBC have given us the opportunity to tell this story in full. The series touches on huge cultural themes as well as the controversies that will inform how we think and feel about Michael Jackson.”

Fremantle are distributing the series internationally. Mark Reynolds, Fremantle’s Global Head of Documentaries and Factual, said: “We’re proud to be bringing this powerful documentary to the global market, told with great depth and integrity by our talented colleagues at 72 Films. A key part of our documentary slate, it reflects Fremantle’s ongoing commitment to bold, distinctive, world-class storytelling that resonates with audiences everywhere.”

Fremantle’s global documentary slate includes acclaimed titles such as It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley; The Zelensky Story; Once Upon A Time In Space and the recently announced The Beatle and The Bass (w/t), with Sir Paul McCartney. Fremantle has made several strategic investments to support and bolster its growth strategy within the documentary and non-scripted market which includes more than 22 Fremantle documentary labels, producing in over 12 territories.
