Keshet International licences C4’s The Great School Swap to TV 2 in Norway

August 29, 2025 by TVA Editor

Keshet International (KI) has licensed Top Hat Productions’ multi-award-nominated social experiment format The Great School Swap to TV 2 in Norway.
Inspired by a US integration initiative from the 60s, Top Hat Production’s original three-part docuseries The Great British School Swap for the UK’s Channel 4 saw pupils from an all-white school in Tamworth swap with pupils from a nearby all-Asian school in an ambitious social experiment to integrate teens from different cultures and backgrounds. The results were explosive, exciting, and ultimately uplifting as the children overcame the misconceptions and prejudices caused by living in segregated communities.
Kelly Wright, KI’s MD of Distribution says, “We are thrilled that TV2 is adapting this ambitious social experiment format for its viewers in Norway. When it premiered on Channel 4, it sparked conversations around segregation, stereotypes, and integration, while also suggesting that young people are more capable of seeing beyond prejudices than many of the grown-ups around them. I hope Norway responds in a similarly positive way to TV 2’s School Switch.”
Trygve Rønningen, TV 2’s Program Director, comments, “Skolebytte shows how meetings across differences can create understanding and community. We hope TV viewers will be inspired by the openness and curiosity of these young people. Prejudices can be challenged and broken down when people meet and share experiences, and our hope is that this series contributes to exactly that.”
Produced by Norway’s Teddy TV (Kjære Mor, Petter Uteligger), Skolebytte (School Switch) five-part series brings together 24 ninth graders (ages 14–15) from two culturally different schools located on opposite sides of Oslo to explore social divides and cultural contrasts. Over the course of two weeks—one spent at each school—the students experience each other’s daily lives, meet families, and participate in structured lessons and discussions. They tackle sensitive topics such as religion, integration, gender roles, prejudice, and dating, aiming to break down barriers and challenge assumptions.
Hosted by Janne Amble and Kadafi Zaman, who also reflect on these issues from their own perspectives and past experiences, candid conversations touch on themes like drugs, the hijab, career choices, homosexuality, and social prejudice, adding depth and relatability. Skolebytte premieres August 28 on TV 2 Play and TV 2 Direkte.
Channel 4’s The Great British School Swap was praised for tackling important social themes head-on. Critics highlighted how the programme “didn’t shy away from reality” (The Guardian) and was “well-intentioned” in its exploration of cultural divisions (Broadcast). The series stood out for sparking national conversation around identity, diversity, and integration in Britain’s schools. Its impact was also recognised within the industry, earning a nomination for Best Documentary Series at the prestigious 2020 Grierson Awards and a further nod for Best Factual Entertainment Series at the 2020 Royal Television Society Awards, cementing its place as one of Channel 4’s most thought-provoking factual projects.
