Tosin Igho’s Suspicion to be released as Prime Video Original on November 28

November 13, 2024 by TVA Editor

Nigerian director Tosin Igho’s upcoming feature Suspicion will be released worldwide as a Prime Video Original on the 28th November. The film is produced by Igho’s production studio Divergent Films.

The film introduces the audience to Voke, portrayed by award-winning actor Stan Nze (RattleSnake: The Ahanna Story, Colourless, The Blind Date) – a man wielding ancient Juju powers who finds himself entangled in a web of vengeance after his goddaughter’s murder. But unlike the clear-cut morality of Western superhero narratives, Suspicion stirs a more complex brew.

Set against the pulsating backdrop of modern Nigeria, the film follows Voke’s descent into the shadowy world of black magic as he hunts for his goddaughter’s killers. His journey reveals a man torn between the allure of dark powers and their devastating consequences, reflecting the delicate balance between tradition and morality in Nigerian culture. Each ritual performed and each ancient power embraced forces Voke to question not just the price of vengeance, but the very essence of justice in a world where the line between right and wrong grows increasingly blurred.

As Voke uncovers layers of betrayal and faces unthinkable revelations, the story serves up a feast of moral dilemmas that challenges audiences to question their own understanding of justice and power. The film challenges global audiences’ perceptions of mystical storytelling. In this Prime Video original, debuting worldwide on November 28, Igho crafts a narrative where ancient Juju powers become a lens for exploring profound ethical dilemmas rather than mere visual spectacle.

This complex moral universe comes to life in a high-stakes revenge tale that merges traditional African mysticism with contemporary genre filmmaking, marking one of the streaming platform’s most anticipated African original releases of the year.

The film will be available to Prime Video subscribers in over 240 countries and territories.

The stellar cast includes Omowunmi Dada, Kalu Ikeagwu, Uzor Arukwe, Shaffy Bello, Tina Mba, Ashafa ‘Small Mummy’ Salamot, Francis Sule, Boma Akpore, Tony Akposheri, Esegine Orezi Allen and multi-AMAA award winning Richard Mofe-Damijo who is also an executive producer on the film. Divergent Studios brought the supernatural elements to life through a combination of practical effects and CGI.

Tosin is known for Netflix’s Nigerian feature film Seven which proved to be a landmark worldwide success, earning seven AMVCA nominations and two wins, establishing him as a force in African cinema. His latest directorial venture, Suspicion, a Prime Video Original, represents the culmination of his artistic evolution, bringing Nigerian storytelling to a global platform.

Tosin Igho, director of Suspicion, says, “African powers aren’t just about spectacle, they’re deeply rooted in moral responsibilities and consequences. Traditional African magic has always been about balance. When you dish out vengeance, you must be prepared to taste its bitterness yourself.”

Stan Nze says, “Suspicion is more than a story of supernatural vengeance; it’s an exploration of justice through an African lens. This film challenges us to confront the moral costs of power and journeys into the soul of Nigerian culture, seeing justice, vengeance, and tradition clash in complex and unexpected ways. Audiences will have a new perspective of African mysticism rarely explored on this scale.”

As global audiences crave new angles in supernatural storytelling, Suspicion emerges as a fresh entry amid rising interest in African content. Nigerian cinema, in particular, has seen a notable uptick in international streaming demand, showcasing unique narratives and diverse cultural perspectives that transcend conventional Western superhero tropes.
