Exhibiting with an all-new, larger booth (P-1.D50), Nippon TV, Japan’s leading multiplatform entertainment powerhouse, announced today that the company will head to MIPCOM with two new scripted formats and one new unscripted format. In addition, the company’s business reality competition format Money or Junk will be featured in this year’s Treasure Box Japan. The announcement was made today by Mikiko Nishiyama, Executive Vice President of International Business Development, Nippon TV.

First up is a long-awaited exciting new script from the creators of Nippon TV’s mega-hit drama series Mother and Woman -My Life for my Children-, titled Love with a Case (60min. eps.). Love with a Case is a suspense dramedy series that follows four members of the police who actually have no right to investigate but somehow solve complex cases with their unique sense of perception and deductive reasoning that is unconventional for common detectives. Next is Home Tutor (60min. eps.), a mysterious but intensely satisfying scripted drama series where a peculiar home tutor guides her students in unique ways, teaching them how to use money wisely in order to survive the harsh reality that exists in the world.

This series is from the creators of Nippon TV’s award-winning drama series, I’m Mita, Your Housekeeper.

On the unscripted side, Time Potion (60min. eps.)  is an innovative and exhilarating new high-concept game show format where time is the ultimate ruler and contestants must fight across three stages while their “life” starts to tick away. “Drink it to survive” is the unique essence of the show; bottles containing “time potion” are scattered around in the game universe and upon achieving a challenge, the contestants gain the chance to drink the potion, which will extend their lives in the game.

Furthermore, Nippon TV’s unscripted format Money or Junk (60min. – 120min. eps.) will be featured at MIPCOM’s Treasure Box Japan, the Japanese Formats Showcase. Unveiled at MIPCOM Online last year, Money or Junk has been upscaled and a new episode successfully aired during primetime in May on Nippon TV and is setting a trend in the industry as a new type of business reality competition format. Contestants compete to make real money out of anything, through actual e-commerce apps, all while being taken to a remote location where resources are scarce. Treasure Box Japan will be held on Monday, October 17, 2022, at 16:30 at the Hi5-Studio in the Palais de Festival.

“With the continued global success of our drama formats Mother and Woman -My Life for my Children-, we are delighted to be offering our newest and long-awaited scripted drama series Love with a Case from the same creators and showrunners. The script is Sakamoto at his best, depicting each relatable character in depth, unveiling mysteries foreshadowed earlier in the story and making the series unmissable, episode after episode. Home Tutor is a thrilling and intense series for viewers living in new life standards post-COVID, where a peculiar home tutor teaches how to deal with one of the most important elements of life: money,” commented Nishiyama. “We are also very excited to introduce Time Potion for the first time to the international market. It is the ultimate time-battle game show with a surprising twist where the contestant can drink a special potion in order to gain more game survival time.”

Added Nishiyama, “Having had success this spring as the only Japanese TV format creators that exhibited with a booth at MIPTV 2022, I am also happy to announce that we are relocating to our new prime location in the Palais (P-1.D50). We welcome all friends and clients to come and experience our new home in Cannes and jointly create an atmosphere that will lead to the further success of our industry.”

Love with a Case is a suspense dramedy series that follows the escapades of a police detective who recently got suspended from work after making a big mistake. While still committed to finding the truth, the detective joins forces with three other colleagues that are all from different departments to formulate his own investigative team. They’re not exactly what you would call champions of justice. They’re not even ambitious enough to go for success. All they want is the truth out of the strangest-looking crime cases. Each one carries their own baggage of complicated issues, they work together to solve complex cases while creating new bonds of friendship and love. However, the overwhelming mystery from the past involving the four starts to swallow them.

Home Tutor is a family oriented-drama series where three mothers and children, of all different ages dealing with common life problems, decide to hire a peculiar home tutor. The women are from very diverse backgrounds and of different socioeconomic statuses, but all dealing with the pressure of motherhood and the hope of getting their child into their dream school. Meanwhile, the three kids are burdened by their own serious problems, which they can’t tell their parents. When they encounter this mysterious home tutor with her own hidden aim, the unconventional lesson about the reality of life and money starts. Through the interaction with the home tutor, the women and children learn valuable life lessons that develop this touching series into a story of inspiration.

Time Potion is a high-concept game show where time is the ultimate ruler. In this survival game show, nine contestants must compete during three stages in unknown places without a clue as to what game they are about to play. As the game begins, their “life” begins to tick away. To stop the countdown, the players must complete the mission or else be eliminated as their life hits zero. Separate from the mission, players are also challenged to find bottles scattered around the field to drink a time potion that will allow players to recover their life or grant them redemption of a cash prize. In the end, only time will tell who will be named the ultimate winner.

Money or Junk is a business reality competition format where contestants compete by self-monetizing in remote locations using available resources, to sell on e-commerce apps. All it takes is a smartphone in one hand to make money anytime, anywhere. Contestants compete and see who has the greatest earning capacity. It could be an outdoors enthusiast, e-commerce app lover, chainsaw art fellow, IT guru, adventure photographer, or anyone with business, survival, or craft skill sets to maximize the value of resources worth zero can join this unprecedented battle. Located in abandoned factory sites or remote villages, they create value in what seems like junk, before selling them on e-commerce apps where even a small woodchip can be an attractive product for someone. Whoever comes out with the biggest cash earned within the time limit is the winner.
