iQiyi original crime drama ‘Chasing the Undercurrent’ set for global premiere

iQIYI’s highly-anticipated crime drama Chasing the Undercurrent is set for global premiere on August 25 (Thursday) on iQIYI worldwide. The full-cast lineup reveals a pleasantly surprising group consisting of highly-acclaimed actors from different generations, including Johnny Huang, Tony Yang, Cass Gai, Li Youbin, Cheng Yu, and Morni Chang. Together, they will advance forward a story where different forces from society clash as changes happen every second. In response to the audience’s enthusiasm, the team has also recently released a behind-the-scenes video which features lead actor Johnny Huang literally jumping into the sea for a scene, to the point where he even broke skin and injured himself! Meanwhile, newly married actor Tony Yang of Light the Night also returns with an enigmatic presence as his character hides behind sinister smiles, making the audience hold their breath as they eagerly wait for more.

Chasing the Undercurrent tells the story of the fight between police forces and the crime syndicate headed by the Zhao family through the perspective of a young officer Chang Zheng (played by Johnny Huang). In the small town of Changwu, Chang Zheng has been investigating the Zhao family for a long time. The family is headed by Zhao Pengchao (played by Tony Yang), who is one of the most powerful figures in town. Can Chang Zheng, a mere officer, be able to enact any change as he is embroiled in this drama of money and power?

In the debut posters, one can see officers Chang Zheng (played by Huang Johnny) and Yan Guohua (played by Li Youbin) standing righteously in the light as they represent the police force. Meanwhile, the five members of the Zhao family hide in the shade, but that only increases their charisma and sense of power. In such a world where forces from all sides clash, would the so-called righteous ones remain true to their heart or destroy everything for money and power? Would the so-called evil characters truly be merely a “bad guy” who views money as their ultimate goal while ignoring justice?

The lead duo consisting of Huang Johnny and Tony Yang has also been hailed by netizens as the “power duo that blows everyone’s mind”! In a behind-the-scenes video released on Weibo, John Huang even jumped into the sea for a scene that he was shooting. This dangerous action caused him to suffer injuries such as a deep cut to his hand, and he had to apply alcohol disinfectant even though his hand was wet with seawater. Imagine the pain! But he braved through it all and even waved it off, displaying his “manliness” right on-screen!

Tony Yang recently tied the knot with his long-term girlfriend! His accuracy in portraying two largely different characters with polar opposite personalities – an evil prince in Time to Love, and a righteous officer in Light the Night – has earned him critical acclaim. That is exactly why his performance in Chasing the Undercurrent as the sinister and ambiguous Zhao Pengchao is so highly-anticipated, and of course, so is his chemistry with partner Johnny Huang.
