Every young couple in Singapore is anxious when the boyfriend enlists for full-time National Service (NS). If relationships in normal times are tough, relationships during NS are tougher. So Drama! Entertainment’s (SDE) first romantic-comedy short film titled He’s Not the One explores the emotional sacrifices young couples make as one answers the call to serve the nation.
The film was written and produced by SDE’s Aaron Khoo and Leroy Lim. The duo was inspired by Leroy’s personal experience surviving “breakup season” during NS. “Many scenes used in the film are from my own encounters with my then-girlfriend, now wife; and they became the basis for the male lead’s story”, recounts Leroy. “Thomas tries to be a decent boyfriend, but he’s always too tired from all the training especially during Basic Military Training, when practically everything revolves around NS”. As we commemorate 55 years of National Service in 2022, “He’s Not the One” is dedicated to all past and present National Servicemen and the ones who journeyed with them through challenging times. Sometimes they win, sometimes they learn.
Starring Michelle Wong and Darrick Chew, He’s Not the One uses humour and a dreamy stylistic treatment to draw in viewers with its portrayal of young love in a uniquely Singapore context.
