Sydney – The BBC have commissioned Steve Backshall’s latest project from ScreenDog Productions and Escapade Media, Steve Backshall & The Vertical Mile. It will be available with 3 weeks of ‘As Live’ Daily feeds and as a completed format of 2 x 50’4K or 3 x 30’ 4K with 5 x 3’ Virtual Reality shorts.
The naturalist and adventurer will attempt his life-long ambition to scale the North Face of The Eiger in Switzerland. It is one of the highest vertical mountain faces in the world consisting of over a mile of frozen smooth rock, ice waterfalls and crumbling ice fields. The series and climb are to be shot in March 2018.
Using the most up-to-date technology, the fully immersive Virtual Reality component produced in line with the broadcast series, will push the bounds of VR story-telling and make viewers feel they are right next to Steve on the mountain.
In response to the commission, Steve Backshall said, “Being able to take someone from their front room to the most terrifying place on the planet, is almost as big a thrill as climbing it.”
