At the 19th edition of the HK FILMART, major film industry players in Hong Kong made their presence including Pegasus Motion Pictures, Emperor Motion Pictures, Sun Entertainment, Media Asia Distribution, TVB, Mega-Vision, Mei Ah Entertainment, Filmko Films and many more. Foreign multiplier pavilions included Canada, USA, UK, France, India, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Russia and Vietnam. An enhanced conference programme this year included six thematic events, together with first time collaboration with the Producers’ Guild of America (PGA) which organised a panel discussion on Making Asian Films in America, featuring producers of top Hollywood Films as well as Academy Award winning independent films.
Director of Thailand’s Film Office, Ubolwan Sucharitakul acknowledged that 2014 was a challenging year for them. Statistics show that 2014 saw 631 international productions shot in Thailand which generated revenue of over 59 million. This was a decrease of 11% over 2013. Strike Back, the international TV action series was one of the major programmes filmed last year in Thailand. Indian filming in Thailand saw a steady rise but the dramatic Asia’s Entertainment Hub growth came from China. As production cost began to rise in China, many production houses look to Thailand for filming and crew support. Thailand is increasingly attractive to Chinese producers seeking high production value and experience crew at reasonable overall cost.
A new milestone was marked at the Shaw Brothers Pictures launching ceremony which is wholly owned by TVB. It was announced that movie development will remain as the major business of TVB. Hong Kong’s TVB is devoted to continue Shaw Brother’s excellent tradition of producing the best in movies. This year, two movies, Triumph In the Sky and From Vegas to Macau II achieved remarkable results and was rated one of the top movies in China movie market.

He highlighted that Shaw Brothers is committed to re-establish the movie legend of Hong Kong by dedicating to expand its overseas movie market by developing more quality movies to motivate younger generations to join the movie industry and nurturing talents.
As usual, TVB did not fail to amuse the audience with its stunning line up of cast who graced the event while new initiatives to launch OTT service in early 2016 with Hutchison Global Communications Limited (HGC) and 3 Hong Kong was announced. This marks another significant milestone in “New Television Experience”, not only for TVB but for the general TV viewers in Hong Kong. TVB’s Cheong Shin Keong, Executive Director and General Manager expressed that to ensure a provision of diverse convenient and high quality personalised TV encounter, global entertainment programmes will be incorporated into the OTT platform.
Value-added services such as personal profile with viewing history, video-on-demand and catch-up service will also be included, contributing to a TV encounter without any time constraints.
In view of the cooperation with internet and telecommunications service providers, he announced TVB’s collaboration with HGC and 3 Hong Kong for sales and distribution of its OTT service. He further expressed TVB’s exploration to collaborate with other internet and telecommunications service providers are also on track simultaneously.
When launched, TVB’s OTT business will further enrich both the genre and quantity of its present pool of programmes available. Apart from the existing channels, popular classic dramas and 13 TVB pay-channels will also be included, namely TVB Japanese Drama, TVB Korean Drama, TVB Chinese Drama, TVB Drama Select, TVB Classic, TVB Encore, TVB Window, TVB Food, TVB Classic Movies TVB Entertainment News, TVB Sports, TVB News and TVB News 2.
In a nut shell, subscribers will enjoy more than 25,500 hours of programmes comprising of 17,700 hours of TVB programmes and 8,500 hours of acquired programmes. The drama channels will ensure a timely broadcast of more than 1,700 hours of latest dramas from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China, which will all be dubbed in Cantonese. What’s more, 1,700 episodes of traditional dramas from TVB Classic Movies will be available in the new OTT service.
