Cannes, France – CANAL+ Création Originale and Cattleya have commissioned a new, 8×60’ drama series, ZeroZeroZero, created by Roberto Saviano, produced by Cattleya and directed by Stefano Sollima, the highly acclaimed director of Romanzo Criminale the Series and Gomorrah the Series.
ZeroZeroZero, the series, to be shot in English, is based on Roberto Saviano’s recently released book of the same title and is the follow-up to his international best-seller, Gomorrah.
ZeroZeroZero will be written by the talents with whom Cattleya created Gomorrah the Series – Stefano Bises, Leonardo Fasoli and Saviano – achieving an unprecedented success for an Italian television production, among both critics and audiences in its home territory and abroad.
The cocaine International empire has its roots in the fragile network linking powerful organisations and unscrupulous individuals; The Mexican cartels that manage the production of coke, the great mafia mobs that deal with its distribution in the world, and the apparently above any suspicion businessmen and banks who control the infinite amount of money involved in this market. ZeroZeroZero tells what happens when one of these tassels falls apart while a gigantic cargo of coke is shipped from Mexico to Europe. An epic war of power in which all the actors involved, from the single drug dealer up to the most powerful boss of the crime organisation, have to fight and put their own lives at risk.
Fabrice de La Patellière, Director of French Drama and co-productions for CANAL+ said, “We are delighted to be involved in initiating this major, international project driven by Roberto Saviano’s talent and commitment. This original story, the work of the accomplished scriptwriters Stefano Bises and Leonardo Fasoli and directed by Stefano Sollima, offers an uncompromising, in-depth look into the world of cocaine trafficking and the numerous complexities of the system. This invaluable partnership with Cattleya offers the opportunity of a unique series for our subscribers.”
“Europe is producing new, original series that are capable of reaching a global audience,” said Riccardo Tozzi, Cattleya’s Founder and a Partner. “Cattleya and the artists with whom it created Romanzo Criminale – The Series and Gomorrah the Series are thrilled to work with a partner like Canal+ that has an extraordinary history with content as well as with STUDIOCANAL and Tandem who have managed to acquire such a strong position in the international market.”
“This is a compelling and revelatory dissection of the global traffic of cocaine and how it touches lives across an international social spectrum,” said Jonas Bauer, Executive VP / Partner Tandem. “ZeroZeroZero is a story that opens a window on a world that we think we know but don’t really understand and one that will surely appeal to broadcasters worldwide.”
ZeroZeroZero is the second television series based on the work of author Saviano, Italy’s most prominent anti-mafia campaigner, which will air on CANAL+. Previously, the French broadcaster picked-up Sky Italia’s crime drama Gomorrah for broadcast in 2015. First made into a film by Italian director Matteo Garrone in 2008, Gomorrah received critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the prestigious Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival.
