As TV5Monde blows 30 candles, the channel that reaches over 250 million homes in the world, has never felt so young.
The new on-air identity revealed last autumn reflects the pillars of the channel: vector of influence (the circle of light), diffusing culture and diversity (fresh colours) around the world (horizon line).
For French is not just a language; it represents a cultural space. Over 200 million of people speak French around the world, creating a dynamic and cosmopolitan group.
For them, TV5Monde produces two unique magazines: 64’ le monde en francais, a daily news show + 200 millions de critiques, a weekly show that will shed some light on the cultural life of this community.
As for the signal in Europe, it will maintain its strong anchorage into cinema, with Sundays and Thursdays dedicated to movies, traditional award winning French speaking movies during Cannes Film Festival in May and cycles around major actors and directors.
The channel maintains its offer of premium documentaries showing the diversity of the world, with series acquired from partner channels (Echappées belles, Des racines et des ailes, Thalassa and 360° Geo).
A new window dedicated to History will appear on Tuesdays and another one for Portraits on Thursdays.
Entertainment will be maintained on Saturdays, while Crime series keep their traditional audience on Fridays.
After 30 years in the market, the channel is finding a new younger audience. It now reaches out to everyone who likes the French culture and lifestyle, and who has an appetite for the world in its diversity.
To serve this larger public, more Lifestyle rendezvous have appeared, with two evenings dedicated to the genre (Wednesdays and Fridays), in addition to mornings Monday to Fridays.
To increase the loyalty of its audience, the channel has invested in series which have proven track records. This will show in October, with the return of Le plus grand Patissier (The Great French Bake off Season 2) on prime time Saturdays, with 6 new episodes of culinary challenges. Every Friday Les carnets de Julie: who will be travelling to every region of France to discover and taste its gastronomic specialty.
Lifestyle is considered in its wider sense to promote French cultural patrimony, as shows the series Le monument préféré des français (French favourite monument), with 120 historical sites and buildings that viewers then vote for on line – coming up this autumn.
To create the event on air, the channel will surf on specific events. For instance October will wet appetites, in line with the Semaine du Goût (taste week): more cakes on Wednesdays with Les plus beaux gateaux du monde (nicest cakes in the world), Les aventuriers du terroir (5 local craftsman struggling against junk food and promoting real local food). And all the documentaries showing in the next few months will put a particular emphasis on environment and ecological factors as Paris Climate conference approaches in 2015.
