Arrow Media continues to build its portfolio of specialist factual programming with series two of Dogs: Their Secret Lives (3 x 60’) for Channel 4. The re-commission sees the UK indie build upon the success it had with last year’s one-off documentary, as it continues to grow its portfolio of animal-related content, exploring the domestic side of animal interaction.
Nick Metcalfe, Executive Producer, Arrow Media, said: “It’s been exciting to reprise the filming of Dogs: Their Secret Lives, especially after the overwhelming response the first documentary received. This series uses camera rigs and ‘dog cams’ in the home and outside to capture a unique perspective on the lives of dogs in the UK. Last year our camera rigs revealed some of the extraordinary things our dogs do when left home alone and this year, we’re extending the range of our ‘surveillance’ cameras to uncover what’s really going on in the relationships between owners and dogs. Combined with the latest canine science and a new survey, we’re aiming to build up a much better picture of the 10 million dogs in the UK and their habits. Following the 10,000 responses we had last time, we will hopefully encourage even more people to join in and generate one of the largest surveys on this subject to date.”
Series two follows on from Arrow’s highly successful one-off programme, also entitled Dogs: their Secret Lives, for Channel 4 which was later extended with new material and broadcast a second time due to the overwhelming response it received. It will see animal scientist Mark Evans return to tackle the major welfare issues that affect dogs and their owners today: obesity, neuroses, and aggression.
Each episode focuses on three dogs and follows their progress as they shed the pounds, calm down and are cured of their fears. The series combines rigged cameras to capture the canines’ unawares, revealing hidden behavioural tendencies and secret habits. It also features interviews with scientists who reveal hidden patterns and the secrets of the nation’s dogs, applying their expertise and the latest research findings to understand and treat the pets.
Dogs: their Secret Lives was commissioned by Tom Porter for Channel 4 and the Executive Producer at Arrow Media for Dogs: Their Secret Lives is Nick Metcalfe.
