The first live 4K over the air transmission in Brazil will happen in the final match of the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014. Globo will hold 4K ultra-high definition demonstrations of three matches of the tournament, in partnership with Sony. Among them are one match from the round of 16 (June 28), one quarter-final (July 4) and the final match of the World Cup (July 13), at the Estadio Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro. The matches will be broadcasted to optimised Sony TVs for this transmission, with embedded 4K technology, installed in Rio de Janeiro.
The event is the outcome of Globo’s tests on solutions for the complete broadcast chain – from image capture to transmission and receiving on latest generation TVs – to provide to the viewer the ultra – high definition experience. Pioneer in the adoption of new technologies for television in the country, Globo has been using 4K cameras in its production process for some time, capturing images with four times more resolution than the current high-definition pictures.
