Tokyo/Singapore/London/New York – Past MTV Video Music Award Japan winners Exile and 2011 nominee Kana Nishino are the first Japanese artists confirmed to perform at MTV Video Music Aid Japan. In response to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the tenth annual MTV Video Music Awards Japan (VMAJ) is being staged as MTV Video Music Aid Japan, an international music television event to benefit the Japanese Red Cross. Nominations were led by Japanese artists Ikimonogakari, Miliyah Kato and Kana Nishino, K-pop sensation Girls Generation, and international superstars Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Eminem, Justin Bieber and Linkin Park each earning three nominations. Japanese artists AI and Yui join Avril Lavigne, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Kanye West as double nominees. MTV Japan and Viacom also announced that a ¥10 donation would be made to the Japanese Red Cross for each vote cast within Japan in all fifteen VMAJ award categories. This contribution, up to a maximum of US$100,000, is in addition to the donations being made to the Japanese Red Cross through an employee matching gift program at Viacom. MTV Video Music Aid Japan will air live across Asia on June 25. A one-hour version will broadcast to over 550 million television homes on MTV worldwide as a special episode of MTV World Stage (airdate to be announced). Both telecasts will provide information on how viewers can support the Japanese Red Cross, contribute to the relief effort and stand in solidarity with those in need. “The automatic donation to the Japanese Red Cross is a simple way to raise funds and give Japanese music fans a new way to help,” said Indra Suharjono, executive vice president and managing director of Viacom International Media Networks North & Southeast Asia. “Our goal with MTV VIDEO MUSIC AID JAPAN is to create an unforgettable night of music that pays tribute to the resilience of the Japanese people, and inspires audiences all over the world to contribute to the recovery effort.”
