It all began when Australian producers Margie Brown and Mandy Lake, came across an article about the 100+ Club in the local newspaper. The club, as the name suggests, was created for those 100 years of age or older. The exclusive group meets three times a year at luncheons put on by the mayor of Brisbane and the Queensland Premier. “We’ve been ‘stalking’ the centenarians at these functions since 2009,” Brown told TVAPlus from Australia. “It was important that the three characters we chose to feature, could last the distance. The time critical aspect in planning the shoots was always a concern when your characters are 100 years old and over!” The 26min documentary follows the lives of three active members of the club: Ruth, Olive and Dexter, 100, 102 and 100 respectively. Sporty Ruth, who is practically blind, first took up athletics at the age of 74 when she got fed up with minding everybody’s bags at athletics meets. Now she throws the javelin, discus and shot-put. Olive, songstress and cancer survivor, started singing lessons when she was 89 and came second in Brisbane’s City Council’s Senior Idol competition last year. While Dexter, a former cattleman, is a published author currently on his sixth book, who only took up writing at ripe old age of 86. Through the characters and their various activities, the programme shows not only how much life these old folks still have but also the challenges and stereotypes they face of being ‘old and invisible’. The 100+ Club, which was only one of two clubs the late Queen Mother belonged to, was commissioned by Australia’s ABC and supported by Screen Queensland, and will screen later this year. “We’re also keen in cutting a longer version of the doco for the overseas markets and for DVD,” said Brown.
