Cannes – Universal Networks International (UNI) announced its ambitious channels expansion strategy and structuring for future growth. In October 2009, Universal Networks International announced a multi-million dollar investment in a refocused portfolio of five core channel brands (Syfy Universal, DIVA Universal, 13th Street Universal, Universal Channel and Studio Universal) as a key driver in this expansion strategy, alongside new services such as HD and VOD. The rollout of these new brands and services has begun, including Universal Channel in Japan and South Africa, Syfy Universal in Europe. Since launching its multi-million dollar rebrand strategy, UNI has grown its subscriber base to 180m, and its distribution to 150 countries worldwide. The brand strategy is underpinned by a significant investment in original and first-run content to populate these ‘tastemaker’ channels. In October 2009, UNI announced a world-class production partnership with E1 Entertainment on Stephen King’s Haven. A further UNI/E1 content alliance was formed on the police drama Rookie Blue, launched at MIPTV last week. More recently, the announced collaboration with USA Network on Facing Kate.
