India – The board of India’s broadcasting corporation, Prasar Bharati, has asked the national television broadcaster, Doordarshan (DDI), whether it can upgrade to HDTV before next year’s Commonwealth Games, the Press Trust of India reports. DDI has invited expressions of interest from organisations who wish to help it cover the Games, which will take place in Delhi in October next year, because it cannot provide HD coverage itself. DDI’s CEO, B S Lalli has been asked by Prasar Bharati’s board of directors to find out if the revamp can be done with the fund of Rupees 4,530 million (US$90 million) allocated to it by the government to cover the games. The national broadcaster currently uses analogue-based transmitters for standard television broadcasts. Ten foreign broadcasting are reported to have responded to DDI’s call for expressions of interest, fuelling objections from Prasar Bharati board members.
