Thailand – THAICOM Public Company Limited, Asia’s leading commercial satellite operator and the operator of the IPSTAR satellite broadband system, has signed a contract with Vietnam Telecom International (VTI), a subsidiary company of Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications (VNPT), for IPSTAR capacity of 76 megabits-per-second (mbps). The total contract value is worth US$3.45 million over three years. Since April 2006, IPSTAR launched broadband satellite services in Vietnam with VTI, IPSTAR’s long-standing partner, through VTI’s VSAT-IP service brand. VTI offers a variety of services to both individuals and corporate users. For example, it provides GSM trunking services to mobile operators to enable them to cost effectively extend their networks to rural areas. This new agreement will enable VTI to expand their IPSTAR services to serve applications such as broadband internet access, mobile trunking, rural voice services and virtual private networks (VPN). Additionally, THAICOM has also agreed to lease Ku-band capacity on VTI’s Vinasat-1 satellite due to additional requirements for IPSTAR services that are beyond the service area of the Thaicom-4 (IPSTAR) satellite, such as Laos.
