July 12 2008 saw euronews begin broadcasting in its eighth language, Arabic. This follows euronews’ successful bid for a competitive tender from the European Union. On December 6 2007 in Brussels, the channel and the European Commission signed a service agreement to extend the channel’s programming to include Arabic. Philippe Cayla, chairman & CEO of euronews said, “The addition of the Arabic language represents an important step forward for euronews’ multilingual broadcasting strategy which is pivotal to the channel’s ongoing success. Our Arabic version will enable us to increase our viewership amongst Arabic-speaking people in Europe and the Mediterranean basin and will help Arabic-speakers to better understand the framework and issues around European policies.”
