Hong Kong/Doha – Al Jazeera English debuted Wednesday on Hong Kong’s now TV, the IPTV unit of telco Pacific Century Cyberworks. Al Jazeera English launched as part of NOW TV’s basic IPTV package, reaching some 882,000 subscribers. Transmission began 7pm local time with no additional charge and minimal publicity. The Doha-based new channel has been broadcast in Hong Kong via Cable TV since January 2008. Al Jazeera Network also sealed five distribution deals in the Philippines, extending Al Jazeera English’s availability to 500,000 households in the country. The new carriage deals cover the licensing of Al Jazeera English to Global Destiny Cable, the second largest cable TV company in the Philippines, Royal Cablevision Corporation, Eaglevision, and Ultravision Cable TV, as well as the simulcast of Al Jazeera English on ABS-CBN News Channel every weekday from 4 – 4.30pm.
