Kuala Lumpur – According to Malaysia’s national news agency, state-run TV is to feature more ethnic minority actors – amidst fears that the medium sidelines those who are not from the Malay Muslim majority. Bernama quoted Information Minister Zainuddin Maidin as saying that most Malay-language shows dominating Radio Televisyen Malaysia involve only Malay stars, even though many non-Malays are proficient in the language. “Now, even if there are non-Malays in RTM’s entertainment programs, they only hold minor roles,” said Zainuddin. This is thought to be part of a wider move to curb disenfranchisement among Malaysia’s large ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities. The minister did not provide details of how and when the network would highlight more non-Malays, but he urged them to capitalize on the plan and to showcase their talents by reaching out to people nationwide.
