Hong Kong – PCCW-HKT Network Services have been appointed by the government as the contractor to provide free wireless Internet across the SAR. Broadband Internet free Wi-Fi will be accessible at around 350 public locations. The government is targetting over 8,000 wireless hotspots – free and paid for – by mid 2009. And Principal Assistant Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Kevin Choi announced that digital broadcasting will cover half of Hong Kong’s population at its initial launch, rising to 75 percent coverage by the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the whole city by 2011. Analogue broadcasting will be switched off in 2012, subject to further market and technical studies. Mr Choi said that two local television stations will simulcast their existing four television programme channels in digital format, and launch new free channels in both standard- and high-definition formats. The two stations will still air the four existing channels in analogue format so viewers can choose when to switch to digital broadcasting according to their own needs and at their own pace.
