Gold Coast, Queensland – Korean drama Secret Sunshine was named best feature film at the inaugural Asia Pacific Screen Awards held Nov. 13, attended by more than 500 industry luminaries from the Asia-Pacific, Europe and the US. The award was accepted by producer, director and co-screenwriter Lee Chang-dong, a former Korean Minister of Culture. Jeon Do-yeon received the best actress award for her performance in Secret Sunshine, which was selected for official competition at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. Awards were determined by an International Jury headed by Indian actress/humanitarian Shabana Azmi. Best achievement in directing went to Iranians Rakhshan Bani-Etemad and Mohsen Abdolvahab for their film Mainline. Best children’s film was Indonesia’s Denias, Singing on the Cloud. Japan’s 5 Centimetres Per Second took best animated feature, while best feature doc went to Lebanon’s Beirut Diaries: Truth, Lies and Video. Turkish actor Erkan Can was named best actor for his performance in Takva: A Man’s Fear of God. Australian director/producer Dr George Miller won the FIAPF Award for outstanding achievement in film in the Asia Pacific region. The UNESCO Award for outstanding contribution to the promotion and preservation of cultural diversity through film was awarded to Israeli film The Band’s Visit. Jury Grand Prize went to Iran’s Night Bus.
