Hong Kong- Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) clinched a ‘day-and-date’ VOD licensing deal with South Korea’s second-largest broadband provider, Hanaro Telecom, and licensed electronic sell-through (EST) rights for current and library features to the telco. Under the terms of the ‘day-and-date’ VOD deal, SPTI’s upcoming theatrical features will be available to subscribers of the telco’s pre-IPTV service HanaTV on the same day the movie is released locally on home video and DVD in the first ‘day-and-date’ VOD model introduced in South Korea. This marks the second such deal worldwide, following SPTI’s agreement with SingTel for its mio TV IPTV service in Singapore this August. Starting with Spider-Man 3, on-demand titles to be released simultaneously on home video/DVD and HanaTV will include CGI animation movie Surf’s Up and thriller Perfect Stranger. In addition, EST rights licensed by SPTI will enable HanaTV subscribers to download movies to own onto their set-top boxes, PCs and various plug-and-play devices. This is the first time that SPTI has extended these rights to a South Korean client.
