Sydney- Aiming to grow its production presence in Asia Pacific, FremantleMedia is looking to create joint ventures with local partners in key territories and to resume drama production in the region. Simon Spalding, FremantleMedia Director of Operations, Asia Pacific, identifies India and Korea as the top priorities for establishing production co-ventures. He stressed the company is looking to enter only those markets where laws and custom respect intellectual copyright. “Asia Pacific clearly has the potential to be a major contributor to our business over the next 10 years: we just have to find the right business model,” he tells Television Asia. FremantleMedia hasn’t produced a drama series in Asia for five years since a commission by Indonesia’s RCTI. He sees boosting drama as complementing the company’s traditional strengths in reality programming and game shows. The firm’s current production slate include Soccer Prince, which kicked off in China with an auditions program on August 5; Idols in India, Pakistan and Vietnam (where the series is part-funded by Unilever, a first for FremantleMedia in that market); and Let’s Make a Deal in Indonesia.
