The worldwide online population will grow to 1.5 billion in 2011, from 1.1 billion in 2006, which would mean that 22% of the population will be online. Brazil, Russia, India and China are expected to account for most of the growth, according to Jupiter Research’s Worldwide Online Population Forecast, 2006 to 2011: Emerging Economies Catalyze Future Growth. North America’s share of the worldwide online population is expected to shrink to 17% in 2011, down from 21% in 2006. Referring to China and India, Vikram Sehgal, research director at JupiterResearch, said “increased infrastructure development and relatively higher purchasing power from rapid growth of gross domestic product will coincide with increased consumer adoption of the Internet through 2011.”
