STAR, in partnership with DirecTV and BSkyB, will showcase the Championship Gaming Series (CGS), the first international professional video gaming league commencing in 2007. Contestants will compete for cash prizes and the chance to become professional gamers through a series of online competitions in CGS. Regional qualifying events will be held in October in North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia, followed by an international World Championship final in Los Angeles this November. In Asia, qualifying events will be held in China, South Korea, Australia and Dubai prior to the CGS Regional Championship as four teams of 10 will be selected to represent Asia at the World Championship. STAR will have access to footage from global CGS events and will produce content for the Asian series. It will broadcast the league on its channels which reach more than 300 million viewers across Asia. Laureen Ong, Chief Operating Officer of STAR, expects the reality-competition format and elimination process to have a mass appeal to gamers and non-gamers alike.
