If pay TV operators and channels don’t embrace new technologies and platforms, aggressive telcos will grab that business. Broadband will make watching TV cool again, especially among elusive teenagers. Mobile broadcasting will take off faster in Asia than the High-Definition format. While mobile TV won’t replace traditional broadcasting, it will serve as a valuable brand extension for channels. And there will be an explosion of Internet Protocol Television around the world, which will provide opportunities for content providers. That scenario comes from David Butorac, President of News Corp’s STAR Platforms. Butorac, who oversees the company’s platform distribution businesses across Asia, draws on his experience as Group Chief Operating Officer of Malaysia’s ASTRO; Head of Operations and Station Manager at BSkyB; and Operations Director for the launch of Australia’s FOXTEL. “Every telco in the world wants to get to the content business and they’re coming to look to the entertainment revenues they can generate and eat into our business models,” Butorac told a recent subscription television industry conference in Sydney.
