Hong Kong – The Commerce & Economic Development Bureau’s June survey found 53.3% of Hong Kong families, or 1.23 million households, are receiving digital terrestrial television services, up 32.6% on last year’s 40.2% take-up rate. The bureau said the steady growth in the penetration rate shows the services continue to be well received, adding the service coverage will be extended to at least 89% of the population from the existing 85% by the end of the year when the two free-to-air broadcasters complete the construction of eight more transmitting stations. They will extend the signals to cover Yuen Long, Shek O, Luk Keng, Ping Che, Stanley, Cheung Chau, Tai Lam Chung, Tai Po Tsai and Tai O, enabling 280,000 more people to use the services. The survey also found while a set-top box remained the major type of receiver used by viewers, the use of integrated digital TV sets had shown a significant rise in the past year, with their average market price falling about 20%. Up to early July, the Office of the Telecommunications Authority had authorised 208 models of digital TV receivers which receive standard-definition and high-definition channels. Of them, 142 models are integrated digital TV sets and 66 are set-top boxes.
