Singapore – A new survey conducted by TNS shows that fewer Singaporeans will be tuning in to the World Cup games this year. The survey, which polled some 1,000 respondents revealed that overall interest in the World Cup matches in Singapore has dipped by almost 13 percentage points – down from 80% of respondents in 2006 to 67% in 2010. Thomas Isaac Director for Research Services at TNS Singapore said, “The recent financial crisis might have resulted in budget cuts by advertisers resulting in fewer promotions in traditional avenues like high-profile outdoor events and roadshows and a higher presence in online social media networks like Facebook and Twitter. As a result, our poll found participation in World Cup-related activities, such as subscribing to pay-television to watch the matches, watching the final live and betting on matches, is expected to fall.” Slightly more than half of Singaporeans surveyed said they would watch the final live. It’s a four percentage point drop from 62% in 2006 to 58% in 2010. However, this could be due to the fact that 36 % of respondents have yet to make a decision. The other six percent of respondents said they would not be watching the final. The poll was conducted online using Lightspeed Research access panel among a representative sample of 1,000 Singapore adults aged 15-54 from May 27 to June 6, 2010.
