Singapore – StarHub and SingTel have denied local media reports that a deal has been sealed for the FIFA World Cup 2010 broadcast rights. However sources say an end to the impasse is finally in sight, with the two telcos expected to share the costs, the matches – and the losses. Reports of a 50:50 split is believed to be true regarding SingTel and StarHub bearing the cost – which a source confirmed as “less than the US$15 million (S$21 million)” reported on Thursday. But the matches will not be divided up, both telcos will air all the matches and will charge the same subscription, expected to be in excess of S$50, to consumers. Free-to-air broadcaster MediaCorp is also expected to show select matches; reports that the rights were already a done deal came from MediaCorp-owned news sources. FIFA are believed to have been unhappy with remarks made by Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew that implied viewers could watch matches on-line if the situation remained unresolved.
