Australia – Indigenous broadcasters have welcomed the federal government’s announcement of a root-and-branch review of all public funding of the sector and what it delivers, reports The Australian. Included will be government funding of National Indigenous TV, Imparja TV and Indigenous Community TV as well as the 27 metropolitan and regional indigenous community radio stations, eight Remote Indigenous Media Organisations and 71 Remote Indigenous Broadcasting Services. The review will also look at other public investment in the sector, including investment through the ABC, SBS and the Community Broadcasting Foundation. It is due to be completed by October and will be run by Environment Minister Peter Garrett’s Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, which oversees indigenous broadcasting. According to the report, the review’s objective was to examine whether public funding was delivering the best outcomes for indigenous people, said a spokesman for Garrett.
