According to a new report from Media Partners Asia, digital pay-TV subscriptions in Asia will account for 70 percent of the total pay-TV base by 2014 and 82 percent by 2020, compared to just 34 percent at the end of 2009. The report added that the region’s pay-TV sector added 26.6mn new customers last year to reach a total of 340mn, with China and India accounting for 75 percent of the growth. However, overall sales grew just 8.6 percent last year to reach US$ 32bn, compared to 15 percent growth in 2008. Subscription revenues were more stable, rising 10 percent, while ad sales grew just 3 percent. Pay-TV revenues across the region are expected to reach US$ 54bn by 2014 and US$ 75bn by 2020, with digital pay-TV subs to contribute US$ 35bn and US$ 53bn for the respective periods. By 2014, an estimated 446mn homes in the APAC region will have pay-TV services, according to Media Partners Asia, rising to 513mn by 2020, while HD pay-TV is projected to reach 37mn homes in 2014 and 75mn in 2020.
