Bangkok – Broadcaster MCOT expects its new media business to generate revenue of at least 500 million baht (US$15 million) this year, reports the Bangkok Post. MCOT president, Tanawat Wansom says that plans to expand its satellite TV business and website, and to launch digital mobile TV, will drive revenue. Revenue from new media was modest last year at about 100 million baht (US$3 million). But the figure would increase significantly this year, he said. MCOT, the operator of Modern Nine TV, plans to invest 500 million baht to add 11 new satellite TV channels and improve the four it now runs, which are broadcast on TrueVisions pay-TV. The 11 new channels will be broadcast either on C-band free-to-air or on TrueVisions. According to Wansom, details about concepts and content for the new channels will be finalised in the first half of this year. MCOT will officially launch its digital mobile-TV service in April. The majority state-owned broadcaster has co-operated with the Korean mobile provider SK Telecom to broadcast 15 channels. The broadcaster expects its revenue to increase by 10 percent to 5.5 billion baht (US$166 million) this year. TV is forecast to rise by more than 10 percent with the recovering economy.
