Rob joined FremantleMedia’s Worldwide Entertainment division in 2003 and has managed a number of the company’s most successful global roll outs including Got Talent, The X Factor, The Farmer Wants a Wife, The Apprentice, Hole in the Wall, Let’s Dance, and Take Me Out as well as the continued success and roll out of the Idols franchise. Rob also helped in the re-launch of the Goodson back catalogue of game shows including Family Feud, Password and Price is Right. 11am Coffee Break 11.15am – 12.15pm Session 2 – Formats in Asia Panel, leading broadcasters and industry experts from around the region share case studies and perspectives on format success and potential in different markets, as well as up to date insights into their markets. Confirmed participants: Wilma Galvante, Senior Vice President Entertainment TV Group, GMA Networks Asia, Inc. Wilma was promoted to Senior Vice President of the Entertainment TV Department in November 2004. She leads the Entertainment TV Department in strengthening the shows on QTV, a GMA-powered TV channel which is now ranked third in the Philippines. Galvante is also one of the spearheading figures behind the launch and expansion of Pinoy TV, GMA’s International Channel which broadcasts in the United States, Europe, Guam, the Middle East, Japan, Hong Kong and other key cities in Asia. She acts as the executive-in-charge of production for entertainment programmes being aired by GMA’s regional TV stations in Philippines’ major cities. Sutanto Hartono, CEO Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia (RCTI) Apart from heading up leading national television network RCTI, Sutanto is also the Director of Indonesia’s largest media company PT Media Nusantara Citra, Tbk. He was previously Senior Vice President at Sony Music Entertainment South East Asia and Senior Associate at Booz Allen & Hamilton. He earned his MBA from University of California at Berkeley, and, in 2003, was voted the best CEO in Indonesia by SWA. Gurdip Bhangoo, Senior Vice President, Sony Entertainment Television, India During his one year as Head of Programmes Gurdip has overseen local adaptations of some of the biggest international formats including: Idol, Dancing with the Stars, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here and the Power of 10. He has now moved to a new senior role as head of channel strategy and development where he will concentrate on localizing the next generation of international scripted and non-scripted formats as well as shaping the strategic direction of the channels future creative growth. Before joining Sony, Gurdip was a Senior BBC Executive in the UK where as head of Asian Programmes he was responsible for a slate of programmes in genres ranging from lifestyle, entertainment, factual, drama and live events. Richard Fernandes, Executive Director, Original Production & Development, Turner Entertainment Networks Asia, Inc. (TENA) Fernandes develops new projects and produce new original content for Turner’s entertainment networks across Asia Pacific. Based in Hong Kong, Fernandes oversee the development of live action programs for POGO and other regional development projects for Cartoon Network. Fernandes is an award-winning director and producer, whose diverse experience encompasses sitcoms, reality shows, commercials, documentaries, cooking shows, music videos, and children’s programming. His achievements include an Emmy for directing Bear in the Big Blue House, as well as 11 Emmy nominations covering five different television series, including five for directing, two for producing, and four for single-camera editing. Afternoon 2pm – 3pm Session 3 – Pitching for Success Panel – commissioning editors and senior execs from major format companies share case studies and offer advice on what makes a good format, how to pitch, how to protect your format – and how to get your format commissioned. This session is a must-attend for first-time format producers as well as format distributors looking to penetrate Asia. Confirmed participants: Mark Chan, Regional Sales and Business Development Director, Digital Media and Formats, BBC Worldwide Asia Mark Chan is charged with delivering and growing BBC Worldwide Asia’s Digital Media and Format licensing businesses across all platforms. Responsible for the development and implementation of digital media and format license strategy in Asia (including South Korea, India and Japan), Chan works closely with the Asia distribution team to explore digital media opportunities and online propositions, as well as format and co-production opportunities with broadcasters. Chan joined BBC Worldwide from Disney ABC International Television, where he was Director of Sales for Greater China. Arjen van Mierlo, Chief Executive Officer of Asian Operations, Endemol Group As CEO of Asian Operations Arjen oversees Endemol’s operations across all of Asia including China, India, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore and is responsible for driving forward the Group’s expansion throughout the region.This includes working closely with Endemol’s existing companies in India and South East Asia to further build local output including growth in scripted programming and branded entertainment. Arjen also has a remit to establish new Endemol production bases across Asia, drawing from local talent in the region. Since joining Endemol in 2000 he has held a number of senior management positions including Head of International Operations, responsible for the group’s global business development, corporate development and M&A activities. He took up the role of CEO of Asian Operations in early 2009 and is based in Hong Kong. James Ross, Regional Director for Asia, ITV Studios James’ role encompasses programming sales, licensing and formats activity as well as new media and TV channels. Recent successes for the company in Asia have included large volume sales of programming to VOD operators KT Corp. in Korea, and Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan, as well as the licensing of the Saturday Night Takeaway format to Hunan TV, Who Dares Sings to Jiangsu TV in China, and I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here to Sony in India. ITV has also recently launched a general entertainment TV channel for Asia called Granada TV. James Ross has been in Asia since 1996 when he joined Bloomberg Television’s launch team in Tokyo as a TV Anchor. After becoming Programme Manager, he moved to the business side as Media Marketing Director. He relocated to Hong Kong and was promoted to Media Marketing and Distribution Director in 2004. Samuel Seow, Managing Director, Samuel Seow Law Corporation. Samuel’s expertise and forte is in the field of intellectual property with a special focus on the application of these laws to the entertainment, arts and media industries. A much recognized name in these industries in Asia, he represents a wide range of individuals and businesses including: film, television and record producers and production houses, concert and show promoters, performers, screenwriters, management agencies, television, film and music personalities, models, artistes as well as both established and developing theatre companies. His clients today include Sony Entertainment Television; Cubix & Kosmic International; Tanya Chua; Andrea Fonseka and Sun Ho, who recently released a single with reggae superstar, Wyclef Jean. Arturo Cesares Cortina, Advisor for Asian Countries, Televisa Internacional With a broad experience in media and communications and having spent the last five years in China, Arturo was appointed in 2007 as Televisa’s Advisor for Asian Countries. Since then, he has been responsible for the development and implementation of Televisa’s business development strategy in China. In 2007 he introduced the format La Fea mas Bella from the original Yo soy Betty la Fea (Ugly Betty) to China and has followed-up on that success with five seasons produced locally and broadcast by Hunan Satellite. He also introduced the format of the TV drama Dumb Girls don’t go to Heaven whose first season will be broadcasted by Dragon TV in August 2009. On the distribution side, last year Arturo sold the long Mexican TV drama Distilling Love to CCTV and is constantly searching for distribution opportunities for Televisa’s properties in the region. 3pm Coffee break 3.15pm – 4.15pm Session 4 – TVA+ Format Superpitch – six finalists shortlisted from across the region (www.onscreenasia.com/superpitch ) get the chance to pitch their idea to a panel of industry experts and commissioning editors. Confirmed judges: Julian Curtis, Sales Director Asia, 2waytraffic Julian started his career in 1997 at startup factual distributor Electric Sky where he looked after sales of an extensive documentary catalogue. On joining Endemol International in 2003 he set up the finished programme sales division selling shows like Fear Factor and Extreme Makeover Home Edition to well over 100 territories. Julian later moved to the format sales division managing Asian territories and overseeing the roll out of such formats as 1V100 and Deal Or No Deal in Korea, Japan and China. Michael McKay, President, activeTV activeTV operates in Australia (founded in 1988) and Singapore. McKay is the Executive Producer and Director of The Amazing Race Asia for AXN, a Sony Pictures Television company. Michael was Facilitator / Producer of the Australian episodes of The Amazing Race series 2 and the Emmy Award winning series 4. Michael was Consulting Producer on series 5 and 9, before taking on the Asian version of the production and following up with a producing stint on series 10 and the All-Stars U.S. version (series 11). Avi Armoza, Founder, Armoza Formats Avi Armoza is one of Israel’s leading television and new-media producers, with extensive experience in the field of executive management and corporate development. In 2005, after 18 years in the media industry, he founded ‘Armoza Formats’, a company dedicated to the development and worldwide distribution of TV formats. The company started out representing some of Israel’s most original and successful formats, and has rapidly grown to be a key player in the international formats market, and a distributor of global content. In recent years many of their titles, such as the game show The Bubble and the factual entertainment show The Package have gained international acclaim and have been successfully adapted around the world. Patrick Schult CEO, Fremantle Productions Asia With a background in production Patrick Schult is responsible for operations in FremantleMedia offices across the Asian region, including the production and development of programming in Asia and the roll-out of established FremantleMedia Worldwide properties. Formerly, as SVP, Production and Development, Southern Europe, Patrick provided creative leadership in the production, development and the selling of programmes in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Prior to this, he was General Manager, Fremantle Productions Asia and was instrumental in the creation of the production and licensing business in Asia. Kamil Ahmad bin Dato Mohd Othman, Vice President for Creative Multimedia Strategy & Policy, Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) MDeC is the one-stop agency established by the Malaysian Government to facilitate development of the MSC Malaysia. He is responsible for providing the leadership to drive the Creative Content Industry component of the national MSC Malaysia project and to optimize the industry as an engine of growth for the country. Prior to his appointment in MDeC, Kamil was with the Shell Group of Companies in Malaysia, beginning with Corporate Restructuring in 1981 and then as Finance Manager for the public listed Shell Refining Co (FOM) Bhd in Port Dickson until 1990. Back at Shell Head Office in Kuala Lumpur, he assumed the position of Senior Management Accountant until 1995 when he was assigned to the Business Process Re-Engineering team, the team entrusted to transform the Shell business worldwide. He was headhunted for the Multimedia Development Corporation in 1999.
