India – More than 110 new TV channels in India were granted licences to operate last year, reports The Financial Express. The figures are contained in the annual report of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which issued the licences. In all, 394 TV channels have received government permission to go on air, more than a quarter of them last year alone. “The number of new TV channels has gained momentum due to liberalisation and enhanced enthusiasm shown by the broadcasters to catch a share of the huge entertainment and media industry in India,” said the annual report of the ministry. The figures include 211 news and current affairs channels, constituting 54 percent of the total number. Factors contributing to news channels outnumbering non-news channels include lower entry cost, an increasing share in the total media ad-revenue pie, as well as an easy definition to qualify as a news channel. A news and current affairs channel is defined as a channel with any element of news and current affairs in it.
