Manila – Following the launch of its direct-to-home satellite TV service, the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) is aiming to introduce high-definition TV programming sometime this year. During the recent first quarter financial report press conference, Orlando Vea, chief wireless adviser of PLDT’s Smart Communications mobile division, said the DTH service is already used by a few subscribers in Metro Manila and selected provinces. In an interview, Vea, who is also president of MediaQuest Holdings, said there would be several high-definition channels that could be delivered via the DTH, some of which would be either in 720 or 1080 progressive scanning resolution. Vea said the lineup for the HD channels was being discussed although the DTH service has about 20 channels, including two local free TV channels. The PLDT executive added that the company was looking into pricing schemes that would make the DTH service more accessible to the masses.
