Jakarta – PT MNC Skyvision plans to launch its new Protostar II satellite in March 2009 to expand services and attract new subscribers to its Indovision platform. At a press conference held at in the Information and Communication Ministry Office, Indovision CEO Rudy Tanoesoedibjo said that the operator hopes to raise the number of subscribers to 1.2 million from its current 500,000 individuals and corporations. Protostar-II will have the capacity to transmit about 160 channels, more than three times the 50-channel capacity of current satellite Indostar-I. Tanoesoedibjo said that the company has invested US$300 million in this new satellite, adding that 40 percent of the required funding was raised from loans. He said up to 100 foreign television stations had already made proposals to rent channels offered by the satellite. Protostar-II, a joint venture between Indovision and Protostar, is under construction by Boeing Satellite Systems, slated for launch from Baikonour on 17 March 2009. Indovision has said it expects Rp 1 trillion (US$79.7 million) in sales this year.
