Singapore – The Board of Film Censors (BFC) under the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) will implement from April 28, 2008, a two-tier classification for video and computer games. The ratings system is aimed at helping consumers, especially parents, make informed choices, as well as provide a clearer distinction of games that are allowed or banned. The two categories, ‘Age Advisory’ and ‘Mature 18’ indicated by stickers, limit the sales of the respective game titles to consumers 16 and above, and 18 and above respectively,. Retailers are required to check the buyer’s age at the point of purchase, although the penalty for non-adherence has not been announced. ‘Age Advisory’ class games depict a moderate level of violence, implied sexual activity, nudity without details, vulgar language and unrealistic drug usage. ‘Mature 18’ titles contain realistic depiction of violence, sexual activity, topless or occasional nudity, frequent and strong vulgar language, realistic drug usage depiction, and adult themes including crime and homosexuality. Games containing rape, sadistic violence and language deemed offensive to religions will remain banned. MDA expects to refine the ratings system based on industry feedback upon implementation.
