Helsinki – Nokia, Finnish mobile handset manufacturer, has relaunched N-Gage as a mobile gaming platform to allow games to be played on a range of Nokia handsets. This marks a shift to offer mobile gaming on a more ‘mainstream’ basis from its previous focus of marketing N-Gage as a dedicated gaming device. Games developers Electronic Arts, Gameloft and Vivendi are currently producing titles for the new platform. The N-Gage software download which serves as the portal to mobile games upon installation, is available on the Nokia N81 handset at launch, and will be rolled to other Nseries handsets. Games are tailored to be casual, light, and to incorporate connectivity including instant messaging and contact lists. Nokia is currently exploring possibilities for new games which combine connectivity, the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Web 2.0 applications. The original N-Gage handset which debuted in 2003 failed to take off due to problems including poor design and the lack of market demand.
