Beijing- Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? is finally reaching China. The Mandarin version of the quiz show launches on Guizhou TV at 8.40 pm on Sept. 29. The show will be produced by China Media Power (CMP), via a license deal concluded with the format’s previous owner, Celador International, before it was acquired by 2waytraffic. The initial run is for 104 episodes. “Within the next three months we expect to have distributed the show to a further 100 local broadcasters in China,” says Julian Curtis, 2waytraffic’s Senior Sales Manager for Asia. In Western terms, one million yuan wouldn’t buy a lot of luxury goods, as it’s worth the equivalent of $US133,000. But it’s a big jump on the state-imposed prize limit of 10,000 yuan that usually applies to Chinese TV quiz and game shows. “We are cooperating with China’s largest charity (China Charity Association), which has allowed us to significantly increase the money that can be won for both contestant and charity,” Curtis explains. “The player will split his money with the charity.” Contestants will be a mix of celebrities and non-celebs; the celebrities will play exclusively for charity.
