London/Singapore – Audiences from outside the UK can now access an ad-supported broadband news clip service from BBC World, the BBC’s international news channel. In an exclusive interview with Television Asia, BBC World’s Managing Director Anne Barnard said the new News-on-Demand service is part of a much wider digital strategy for the BBC, domestically and globally. Barnard noted BBC’s international-facing website attracts around 16 million unique users (excluding UK users) per week – with 50% of those users visiting the news pages. Every day, around 30 broadband-quality international news clips and hourly one-minute World News summaries can be viewed by clicking on the ‘watch’ icons at bbcnews.com. Barnard said the commercialization of the international-facing website is pending approval from the BBC Trust, and there are plans for the commercial roll-out, outside the UK, of the BBC’s iPlayer, which enables viewers to see BBC long-form programming via broadband.
