LCD to eclipse plasma as the king of DTV

August 20, 2007 by TVA Editor

Scottsdale, Arizona- LCD will increasingly dominate the worldwide digital TV (DTV) market, while sales of HD TVs will rocket in the Asia Pacific over the next four years. That’s according to high-tech market research firm In-Stat, which predicts LCD will have almost 75% of the global DTV market in 2011, with plasma fading to less than 15%. After surveys in North America, Japan, Korea, the UK, France and Germany, In-Stat found 40% of consumers in Korea and 44% in France were strongly interested in buying HD sets, compared with just 13% in the US. Global DTV shipments are expected to grow from 68 million units in 2006 to more than 144 million by 2011, and revenue from the sale of DTV units will rise from US$71 billion in 2006 to US$76.7 billion in 2011 as pricing pressures hamper revenue growth. Shipments of HD TVs in Asia (excluding Japan) are projected to hit 5.2 million this year (90% higher than 2006) and to reach 27.8 million in 2011. In Japan, HD TV shipments are forecast to total 6.1 million this year (up 32%) and 8.8 million in 2011.
