Bangalore- IPTV is set to boom in India as various services by state-owned telco BSNL and IPTV content provider IOL Broadband Ltd are expected to roll out across some 30 cities in the next 18-20 months, according to The Economic Times. Building on commercial services already available in Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata, the partners have already struck agreements for 59 cities where IOL Broadband will provide content and marketing functions for the IPTV services, and BSNL will provide access to customers. Service launches will be prioritized by requirements and broadband penetration. Speaking at the official launch of BSNL IPTV service in Bangalore on August 15, IOL Broadband Director Mahendra Chouhan revealed that IPTV services will be launched in seven cities from 2007 – 08 and 21 cities from 2008 – 09. The service kicked off in Kolkata on August 14. Although BSNL’s broadband subscriber base stands at one million, Chairman and Managing Director Kuldeep Goyal expressed confidence that the company can add 6 million broadband connections per annum for the next three years.
