Sydney– Australian telco Telstra’s BigPond Movies VOD service has added Disney-ABC International Television to its list of suppliers, joining Warner Bros. Sony, MGM, the BBC, Granada, Discovery, TWI and Troma, and local distributors such as Icon, Hopscotch, Beyond and Becker Entertainment. It’s the Disney Co.’s first internet movie VOD deal in Australia. BigPond’s download-to-rent scheme prices new movies at A$5.95 (US$5.00) or $4 for members, and TV episodes at $2.50/$2.00. The BigPond library now consists of more than 2,500 titles. Telstra has steadfastly refused to divulge take-up figures since BigPond Movies launched 16 months ago. A spokesman says, “It’s a product that will grow over time as the catalogue expands and as more Australians move to high speed broadband and wireless home networking or media centres.” There are no plans to expand into download-to-own, as the spokesman notes: “The value is just not there, nor the range; there’s only a handful of movies with those rights.”
