Sydney- Some 30% of Australian households have digital free-to-air television, up from just 13% in 2005, according to a new study by the Australian Communications and Media Authority. Factoring in households that subscribe to digital television, the ACMA estimates 41% of households have DTV. However around half of the households surveyed either lacked interest, were not aware that analogue TV is due to be phased out from 2010-2012, or didn’t know if digital FTA was available in their area. Main reasons for adopting digital TV were clearer pictures, the replacement of television sets, improved reception and extra channels. The ACMA survey’s findings are broadly in line with Digital Broadcast Australia’s report in early May, which showed that more than 2.547 million digital sets have been sold into the market, a penetration of 28% of Australia’s 7.8 million homes.
