Summing up a year that began cautiously but then rebounded with fervor, television in Asia is by no means on the back foot, going by the conversations had at this year’s CASBAA get-together. Media 3.0 is now hot on everyone’s lips, appetites wet by devices like the iPad, which has moved media into new spaces and places. Catch Up TV is catching on. Various formats debuted in a number of markets. Co-productions aplenty were green lit. New channels were launched, while others had makeovers and secured new exclusive content. The launch of 3DTV has also brought a new perspective to home viewing – which will gain more traction with the launch of the first dedicated 3D channel in the U.S next month. The term ‘content is king’, however is not the only solution for today’s consumers with an insatiable thirst for entertainment and information. Giving them what they want, where and when they want it while being commercially viable and sustainable is the main challenge for the industry in the New Year. With viewers in the driving seat, the next destination is anyone’s guess.
